[Verse 1]

    G F G
Oh, tonight the west moon hangs over the harbour,
       G
Shines down 'cross the headland
F D
and out 'cross the bay,
       G
Shines down through the trees
    F G
and rests on the graveyard,
            F D G F G
The only reminder of a long ago day.

   G F G
My mind takes me back to a time in that harbour,
     G F D
When stout boats at anchor dozed on the sway,
         G
When the laughter of children
     F G
sent glad cries to Heaven,
    G F D G F G
And women looked seaward from meadows of hay.

       G F G
But no longer I see those fish-covered flakes now,
   G F D
No green rows of gardens stretched over the hill,
   G F G
No punt in the beach gleaming red with fresh copper,
   G F D G F G
No fine sturdy stick freshly cut for a keel.

        G F G
For the government men came bribing and preaching,
        G F D
They convinced all the livyers to just move away.
            G
Now they're scattered like dried leaves
     F G
from hell to high water,
        G F D G F G
But the wind and the west moon elected to stay.

    G F G
So, tonight the west moon hangs over the harbour,
       G
Shines down 'cross the headland
    F D
and out 'cross the bay,
       G
Shines down through the trees
    F G
and rests on the graveyard,
      G F D G
As if lookin' for the souls of the ones moved away.
